What is Sahitya Akademi?

Sahitya Akademi is India’s National Academy of Letters and premier literary institution.

Established in 1954 by the Government of India to promote literature in the languages of India including English, Sahitya Akademi promotes literary dialogues and set literary standards for all the 24 languages recognized by the Akademi.

Sahitya Akademi is an autonomous organization working under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Sahitya Akademi promotes literature not only in the 24 languages recognized but also in tribal and oral traditions of the country by

conferring Awards & Fellowships,
organizing literary programmes through the year including Seminars and Symposia, publishing books in all the languages,
organizing translation workshops and
participating in the book fairs across India.

Sahitya Akademi also strives to promote Indian literature abroad by undertaking Cultural Exchange programmes and by participating in Festivals of India Abroad and International Book Fairs.
