About the Library

Sahitya Akademi library in New Delhi is one of the most unique multilingual libraries in the country. It has close to two lakhs books on literature and allied subjects. These books are available in the 24 languages recognized by the Akademi and also has few volumes in other languages too.

Sahitya Akademi has libraries in its offices in Kolkata & Bengaluru and is setting up on in Mumbai too.

The Akademi Library in New Delhi is well-known for its huge collection of books on literary theories and criticism, women’s studies, cultural histories and translation studies. Its specialized collections include publications on and by Rabindranath Tagore, Sri Aurobindo and Mahatma Gandhi. It also includes enriched reference books focusing mainly on Indian and World literature, philosophy, religion, art and culture. The library also has a special collection of books donated by Prof. Gopi Chand Narang.

The library also maintains a small collection of bound volumes of literary periodicals. Online Indexing of periodical literature received in the library is being carried out from 1988 onwards (hard copies of the Indian Literary Index are available for 1988-90 and 1996). Information Alert Services (Newspaper Clippings, Current Contents and Book Reviews) are also available for consultation.

The regional offices’ libraries of the Akademi have sizeable collections. The libraries at the Regional Offices are being built up as centres for the concerned regional languages and are being envisaged as liaison institutions for important language libraries in the regions.

The computerization/ retro-conversion of all 24 language books has commenced and online catalogue for these language books are now available on our website for users.

The Library has an average of 150 literary lovers visiting on a daily basis to make use of its unique facilities.

Library Rules

1. Rules of Admission and Membership

The library is open only to registered members.

The library allows only individual membership.

Membership is given upon payment of a refundable security deposit.

Persons seeking membership may collect the requisite form available at the circulation counter and submit the same duly filled along with two stamp size photographs.

For student membership (M.A., M. Phil. and Ph.D), the forms should be attested by Head of Department and Administrative Officer. For others the forms should accompany residence and identify proof.

Address, telephone numbers and stamp impression must be legible. Otherwise the forms will not be accepted.

Membership enrolment is done between Monday to Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Membership is open to persons residing in the Delhi and NCR (Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Noida only). Postal membership is not available.

Change of address and telephone number should be informed without fail.

2. General Rules

Library users should ensure that the resources of the library are properly used and its dignity and environment properly maintained.

Readers should not misuse books. Underscoring in the text and scribbling of personal comments inside books are not permitted.

Discussions in the stack area and reading room are disallowed.

The reading room is meant only for reading. Persons found to be misusing the reading room will be turned out.

Personal books are not allowed in the library.

Readers should not pile up books on the reading tables.

Cell phones are not to be used in the library. They should be switched off.

Readers are advised not to leave their valuables at the property counter. However bags are strictly not allowed inside the library.

Readers should take care of their valuables. Library will not be responsible for any loss.

3. Details of Security Deposit

To borrow books from any of the language sections of the library, a deposit of Rs.2000/- should be made.

Senior citizens (above 60 years) have also to pay Rs.2000/- as security deposit.

For consultation/Reference of the library’s resources without book borrowing facility, a security deposit of Rs.1000/- will be charged.

Payment is to be made in cash.

For refund of security deposit the requisite form should be duly filled up and submitted along with cash receipt.

4. Rules of Issue of Books

Reference books, costly books, rare books and books published before 1970 will not be available for borrowing.

Only two books are issued per individual.

Books are issued for one month. They will be renewed if there is no demand for them from other members.

If books are not returned on the date due, a fine of Rs. 1/- will be charged per day per book.

Books will be issued only till 5.30 p.m.

5. Rules for Lost and Spoiled Books

Readers should replace books if they are lost by them or spoiled

In case of loss of a particular volume, complete set price has to be paid

Cash payment for loss or unacceptable damage are to be made as per rates mentioned below:

6. Temporary Admission/ Membership

For consulting the library for a period up to 15 days Rs.100/- will have to be paid. Books will not be issued to such users.

7. Reprographic Services (Photocopying, Computer Print Out & Scanning)

Complete books will be copied only in exceptional cases. Readers are not to make such demands.

Only 10% of the total number of pages of a book may be copied.

Photocopying will be done up to 5:30 PM.

Photocopying Charges

Rs. 1/- per exposure, A4 and FS sizes

Rs. 2/- for A3 size; Rs. 3/- for illustrations

Charges for computer printouts

Rs. 3/- per page

Charges for Scanning

Rs. 10/- per copy

Online Catalogue (WebOPAC)

Users can now search Online Catalogue (WebOPAC) for all 24 Language Books available in the library, between 9.30 am to 5.30 pm on all working days, except Sunday and other Gazetted holidays. Please use the following links for accessing the WebOPAC :
