Fellowships

Sahitya Akademi confers two types of Fellowships on writers and scholars who have made outstanding and lasting contribution to the enrichment of Indian Literature through their works over a period of years and two other types of Fellowships to encourage research on Indian literature and Culture to scholars from outside the country.

They are:

Sahitya Akademi Fellowship

Sahitya Akademi Honorary Fellowship

Premchand Fellowship

Ananda Coomaraswamy Fellowship

 

Sahitya Akademi Fellowship

Sahitya Akademi Fellowship is the highest literary honour in India. It is conferred only on the “Immortals of Indian Literature,” whose contributions have made lasting impact on the writers and literary traditions of the country. So far, 97 distinguished writers and scholars have been conferred Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.

Process of Election of Fellows

As per the convention, at any given time not more than 21 Fellows can be there.

For the election of Fellows at the time of every vacancy is that all the General Council Members send their recommendations to the President of Sahitya Akademi.

The President elects the Fellow(s) and his selection is placed before the Executive Board.

The Executive Board ratifies the selection of the President and then the General Council approves it.

No serving Member of any Board or Council of Sahitya Akademi or the serving office bearers or staff of Sahitya Akademi is eligible for election as Fellow of Sahitya Akademi.

Sahitya Akademi Honorary Fellowship

Sahitya Akademi Honorary Fellowship is conferred on scholars who are not citizens of India but made lasting and meritorious contributions for Indian literature in general or in any of the languages of India.

At any given point of time, the number of Honorary Fellows of Sahitya Akademi should not exceed 10.

So far 13 distinguished scholars and writers have been conferred Sahitya Akademi Honorary Fellowship.

Premchand Fellowship

Premchand Fellowship is awarded to creative writers from the countries of SAARC region other than India who are doing research on Indian Literature and Indian Culture.

Sahitya Akademi instituted this Fellowship in 2005 & named it after Munshi Premchand during the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Premchand.

So far 11 writers from the SAARC countries have been awarded with Premchand Fellowship.

Procedure and Details of Premchand Fellowship

The following are the details of the scheme and rules and procedure for operating it:

  1. One Fellowship will be offered to a person of eminence in the field of culture and literature from the SAARC countries other than India every year.

  2. The period of Fellowship will be from one month to three months depending on the convenience and availability of the writer/scholar.

  3. Actual cost of international air journey will be borne by the Sahitya Akademi, as also train or air journey within India.

  4. Arrangements for boarding and lodging will be made by the Sahitya Akademi.

  5. An amount of Rs.25,000 per month will be given to the scholar/writer for meeting incidental expenses.

  6. Nominations of writers and scholars to select the Premchand Fellowship Awardees are invited from the Indian Missions in SAARC countries, members of the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi, senior writers and scholars and from select cultural and literary institutions and universities.

  7. The visiting Fellow will deliver talks or do readings from his/her works in different places during his visit.

  8. The visiting Fellow will be expected to submit a comprehensive report of his visit which will be placed before the Executive Board.

    Ananda Coomaraswamy Fellowship

    Ananda Coomaraswamy Fellowship is awarded to scholars from any Asian country other than India who are pursuing literary projects of their choice.

    The Fellowship was instituted in 1996 in memory of a great scholar and aesthete, Dr Ananda Coomaraswamy.

    The Fellowship was discontinued in view of practical difficulties but was revived in 2005 after revising the terms and conditions.
