Shashi Deshpande was born in the city of Dharwad in India. She is the daughter of the renowned playwright and Sanskrit Pandit, Shri Shirang. At the age of 15 she went to Mumbai and got the degree in Economics thereafter, she went to Bangalore and got the degree in Low. After marriage, she spent most of the time with her two sons. But, during this, she studied journalism, and for same time worked for magazine. In the real sense her writing career started in 1970. She wrote a lot of short stories at that time. She has also written four books for children. Beside, four navels have been published: The dark holds no terror, If I die today, come up and be dead, ‘Roots Shadows’ won her the 1982-33 best Indian writer award.
