Kath: Stories from Kashmir compiled and translated from Kashmiri by Neerja Mattoo, is a collection of short stories by major writers of fiction in Kashmiri. The stories cover the entire period from the late forties, when the first short story in Kashmiri was published, to the present decade. Reading these stories chronologically is like reading a history of Kashmiri society as it evolved during these years. They reflect the changing concerns, values and moods of Kashmiri society through its turbulent history from 1947 onwards. The writers represent all shades of opinion and ideology, coming from different social circles and religious identities. Even though set in Kashmir, each story, in its own style illuminates a facet of life that has universal significance.
